Map out three distinct paths for your professional future using this strategic career planning template. Inspired by the Odyssey Planning exercise from Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, this framework helps you move beyond linear career thinking to explore multiple possibilities for your role and growth trajectory.

What you'll create:

Plan A captures your current trajectory—the natural progression if you continue building on where you are today. Plan B charts an alternative route you'd consider if your first path became unavailable or less appealing. Blue Sky removes all practical constraints—what direction would you explore if limitations weren't a factor.

For each path, you'll think about the immediate term and a few years out, rate your confidence and satisfaction levels, and identify the resources, skills, and conversations needed to move forward. This template uses Miro's AI-powered Flows to help you progress between steps.

Why this exercise matters:

Career growth rarely follows a predictable line. This template helps you show up to manager conversations with clarity about what you want, evaluate new opportunities against a broader picture of your goals, and make proactive choices about your next steps.

Whether you're seeking growth, considering a pivot, or simply want more clarity about your professional direction, Odyssey Planning helps you explore your career aspirations and frame them into concrete, actionable paths you can reflect on and refine over time.

Ideal for individual contributors, managers, and anyone navigating career transitions or growth conversations. Tips and ideas for re-mixing:

  • Bring in any context from other career development or insights you have for yourself, like manager and peer reviews and feedback, or DISC or 16 Personalities assessments.

  • Connect this context to the Miro Flow and adjust the instructions so it can provide summaries tailored to you.
