Hi, This template allows you to perform a 4 part retro with your team. You have access to engaging ice breakers and a retro frame which has all you need.

How to hold the retro.

The retro frame is used per one retro. The frame is duplicated to be used for future retro's.

The retro frame has 4 parts. Below you will find an explanation for each part.

Before you start consider two pro tips;

  • How much time do you have to conduct the retro? Decide how much time you want to spend on each part and use the timer in the facilitation tools. Consider how much time you will give people to provide input and to reflect on it.

  • Hide the parts 2-4 until you reach them with your team. Place a from over each part and use the hide option. This way you won't lose people

Part 1 Check-in

Each team member or participant is represented by a circle with their respective name in it. We will call these bubbles.

In part 1 we will perform a check-in. You capture the attendance of the retro by asking who is present and place their bubble in the circle. This way you have recorded attendance and decide the starting point.

Part 2 Ice Breaker

Here you will perform an ice breaker. On top you have a frame with possible ice-breaker options and instructions on how to use them. It's important to set the scene and get people talking before you dive into deeper topics.

Part 3 Looking back

This part is divided in three phases. It's good to hide the two other phases before you get to them to prevent people from wandering over the board.

You will ask the participants about what went well this past sprint and what you should continue doing. Ask them to grab a sticky from the sticky stack and provide input. Put a timer for the reserved time. When done try to group the stickies and try to discuss the topics.

This you will repeat for the other two parts:

  • What held us back? What should we stop doing?

  • What can we improve? should we start doing?

Part 4 Take action

In this part you ask the team to reflect on what actions you should take together based on your previous discussions. You can move some sticky notes that are already created in the previous part and are clear concrete actions.

Make sure of a couple of things;

  • When will we do it? Right now or later? place the sticky notes in the respective frame.

  • Who will be the main force behind this? Place bubbles or names on this actions.

  • An idea is to add these actions to your sprint board or backlog as improvement tasks/stories etc. This way you keep track on their progress.

  • You can also create a frame here that functions as an improvement backlog.
