Flow Engineering Maps

Purpose

This template exists to help facilitators and flow fans work through the 5 Maps defined in the Flow Engineering book by Steve Pereira and Andrew Davis. These will help you and your team to define where you're going and how to get there! At each step you'll find descriptions, tips, and examples to help you along the way.

Principles

Flow Engineering is based on 3 simple principles: Value, Clarity, and Flow. Defining value is the target, while creating clarity paves a path to reaching that target, and flow enables practitioners to use and improve the path to achieve the target outcome.

Practice

1. Begin with the Outcome Mapping step to define your target outcome as a group.

2. Map the current value stream, working through the activities required to deliver value to your customers.

3. Map the dependencies your target outcome relies on to create clarity around your constraints.

4. Map the future value stream with activities that address the issues identified in steps 1-3

5. Create a Flow Roadmap to prioritize and order the work to improve flow.

5a. In addition to the Flow Roadmap, it may be beneficial to map the capabilities needed to deliver the outcome, particularly if it's identified as a key constraint.
