Fallout Retrospective
Dave Westgarth
Welcome to the Fallout Retrospective board, designed to facilitate effective retrospectives for product managers, engineers, and project managers. This board is specifically tailored to the needs of agile teams working in dynamic environments.
How to use this template
Step 1: Icebreaker activity - S.P.E.C.I.A.L. icebreaker
Start your retrospective session by breaking the ice with the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. icebreaker activity. This activity allows team members to reflect on the previous sprint and identify any missing attributes or skills that could have improved the team's performance. Each team member places a cap token on the attribute they feel was missing or needed in the previous sprint or will be crucial in the next one.
Step 2: Main discussion - core retrospective topics
Select a prompt that resonates with your team and discuss it openly. Encourage everyone to share their thoughts, experiences, and insights related to the chosen topic.
Here are some key prompts to consider:
V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System): Discuss tools or technologies that would make your work easier or reduce friction.
The Regulators: Reflect on instances where you had to enforce rules or boundaries and explore how it impacted your work.
The Outcasts: Identify aspects that should be banished from future iterations to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Vault 101: Share something new you learned and discuss its impact on your work.
Lone Wanderer: Reflect on the biggest challenge you tackled individually and share your experience.
Brotherhood of Steel: Evaluate how well your team worked together and brainstorm ways to enhance collaboration and support.
Super Mutant Level Problems: Discuss how your team effectively collaborated to overcome significant challenges.
Weapons and Armor: Share any new tools, techniques, or knowledge that helped improve your performance.
Surviving and Thriving: Reflect on how your team managed to navigate the complexities of the project and achieve success.
Balancing Exploration and Quests: Discuss how your team balanced exploring new ideas and completing tasks efficiently.
Step 3: Dot voting - Nuka Cola cap tokens
Once you have discussed the core retrospective topics, it's time to prioritize the most important tickets or action items on the board. Use the Nuka Cola cap tokens to dot vote for the tickets that you believe are the most impactful. This process helps the team focus on the most critical areas for improvement and ensures that valuable actions are taken away from the retrospective.
Step 4: ROTI assessment - edition cover ROTI
To gauge the overall effectiveness of the retrospective session, rate it using the Edition Cover ROTI assessment. Rate the session on a scale of 1 to 3, with 1 representing a waste of time and 3 indicating a useful and productive session. Additionally, feel free to leave feedback to provide further insights and suggestions for improvement.
Step 5: Action items - Pip-Boy tokens
To ensure that the retrospective leads to tangible outcomes, use the Pip-Boy tokens to dot vote for the most important or impactful tickets on the board. These tickets represent actionable items that the team can take away from the retrospective and implement in future sprints. Prioritize the tickets with the highest number of votes and assign responsible team members to each action item.
