Personal Career Planning Board

This is a framework I designed for myself to help me visualize my career paths and goals. While not a completely guided workshop, I hope the prompts and workspace help you build a personalized roadmap towards your dream career!

How to use this template

Follow the steps below to start planning your career with this framework:

Step 1: Start by filling out the intro card

Add a guiding vision statement for your career to keep yourself on track. Explain what you want out of your career, and what you want your career to do for you in life. Fill in three defining traits that influence your happiness and working style.

Additionally, utilize the space provided to include any personality tests or typing that can inform your career search. Understanding your personality will help you align your career choices with your strengths and preferences.

Step 2: Identify your core values

Next, delve into your core values and identify the ones that resonate with you the most. Start by browsing the full list of values to choose from, then narrow down your selection to eight, and then further refine it to your top four. These values will serve as guiding principles in your career planning journey.

Step 3: Define your career clusters

Start by selecting your top four career clusters from a comprehensive list of options. These clusters represent broad areas of interest and expertise that align with your passions and skills. By choosing these clusters, you'll lay the foundation for exploring specific career paths within them.

Step 4: Braindump and group your interests

Let your creativity flow as you braindump your interests and things that bring you joy. Group them into categories that resonate with you, creating your personal "ingredients for happiness." These categories will serve as a compass, helping you identify roles and jobs that fulfill your interests.

Step 5: Explore role ideas

Based on your previous activities, start brainstorming various roles and jobs that align with your interests and values. Use these ideas as a starting point for setting up informational interviews and conducting research to determine if they are viable career paths for you.

Step 6: Conduct research

Utilize the dedicated space to keep track of your research for potential career tracks. As you learn more and themes begin to emerge, or if you feel drawn towards a particular career track, continue adding information. Use the provided boxes to document people/jobs and organizations/communities you want to research further.

Step 7: Take action

Armed with a clearer understanding of your career aspirations, it's time to take action. Use the information you've gathered to set goals, network with professionals in your desired field, and explore opportunities for growth and development.
