Context: This exercise is designed for innovators who are preparing to interview subject matter experts (SMEs). Conducting effective SME interviews starts with having a clear and well-structured plan.

Objective: The objective of this exercise is to provide innovators with a tool to intentionally prepare and structure effective subject matter expert interviews by identifying the right experts, clarifying interview objectives, and developing focused, well-tested questions that make the most of limited interview.

Process: The exercise will guide innovators through five steps to create an expert interview protocol:

Step 1: Identify your SMEs - Determine who you need to interview to gather the most relevant insights.

Step 2: Get to know your SME - Research your SME to ensure you have the necessary background knowledge to lead an effective interview.

Step 3: Define your interview objectives - Identify the specific information you need to gain from your SME.

Step 4: Prepare your questions - Develop specific questions that only your SME would have the answer to.

Step 5: Review your interview questions - Test your interview with someone outside of your team and modify any questions that were not clear or interpreted in unintended ways.
