What is S planning?
"S Planning" is used to develop medium- to long-term plans for subjects and topics that make up a lesson plan. S planning is also a great way to organize your thoughts and begin initial planning around a large, complex subject, project or topic.
With this template, you can break down each concept involved in a large, complex topic or subject to ensure you're able to teach through the entire topic within the allotted timeframe.
Who can use this template?
This S plan template is primarily intended to help teachers organize their ideas, resources, and plans to teach a certain subject or topic from start to finish. Ultimately, this s plan template can help you build a thoughtful, well-organized lesson plan that achieves your and your student’s goals.
Why S planning is useful
S planning is useful because teaching an entire subject or topic can be complex with many important details then ensure comprehension over the course of a lesson plan. Instead of starting from scratch or trying to organize many complex sub-topics into a formal plan, S planning allows you to start organizing your lesson plan around the key milestones you need to teach from start to finish.
How to create an S lesson plan
You can use this template to create an S plan that can be used directly as you teach, or used to formulate a formal lesson plan.
Pink stickies in the templateindicate larger, overarching, or key topics you need to reach throughout the course of the timeframe.
Yellow stickies in the templateindicate smaller sub-topics or learning steps that build to each of the milestones.
Here’s how to use this template for your S planning process:
First, identify four core pillars of your subject from least to most complex, or by building on dependencies. If the subject takes place on a timeline, for ex., the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, you can organize pillars from earliest to latest large events.
Then, identify each of the core sub-topics you'll need to cover to ensure student comprehension between each of the core pillars.
Finally, add your core and sub-topics onto the board to fill the pink and yellow stickies, respectively.
(Optional) Add more notes and stickies to document ideas around each of the S-Plan stickies including recommended resources, scaffolding ideas, practice, examples, or other helpful teaching aids.
