Logic Model - River Delta Edition
Overview
A visual logic model that uses the metaphor of a river flowing to the ocean to map how a program's resources translate into lasting impact. Read left to right: from Source (inputs) through Channels (activities) to the Delta (outputs), into Bays (short-, mid-, and long-term outcomes), and finally the Open Ocean (impact). A legend ("Reading the River") decodes the metaphor at a glance, while two bottom sections capture Assumptions (Riverbed Conditions) and External Factors (Weather & Tides) that can accelerate or block progress.
Who Can Use It
Program managers, M&E officers, grant writers, nonprofit teams, academic departments, and anyone designing or evaluating an initiative who needs to articulate the causal chain from resources to results. Works for funding proposals, board presentations, or internal planning sessions.
How to Use It
Duplicate the blank template frame. Replace "[Project Title]" with your program name. Fill each column left to right: list resources under Source, key activities under Channels, countable deliverables under Delta, behavior/condition changes under Bays (split by time horizon), and ultimate systemic change under Open Ocean. Document assumptions and external forces in the bottom sections. Use the connectors already in place to trace causal links between columns.
About the Example
The included example, "Digital Skills for Employability Program," shows a Pakistani university initiative running 12-week coding bootcamps. It illustrates concrete inputs (3 trainers, PKR 4.5M budget, 5 tech-firm partners), activities (bootcamps, workshops, mentorship matching), outputs (240 students trained/year), staged outcomes (80% pass assessment → 65% land internships → 70% employed in tech), and a long-term impact of reducing graduate unemployment in ICT fields.
