About the Icebreaker for Introverts Template

Barbara Sedlack, design technology and operations manager at BMO, created this icebreaker for introverts after realizing that icebreakers were not as fun or energizing for some people. The standard icebreakers would be an anxiety trigger and make some folks feel pretty uncomfortable. Keeping that in mind, she created a template for icebreaker games designed for introverts to solve this problem, so people could still join meetings and get active on the board without stress.

What’s the Icebreaker for Introverts Template?

The Icebreaker for Introverts Template is a virtual, shared space where people come together to learn more about each other. It contains frames designed to be an individual gallery, where each participant answers four questions with images or words. Because this template is self-explanatory, it doesn’t demand much interaction between participants or active participation, making it easier for introverts to take part.

Barbara Sedlack designed this exercise to be inclusive, and it has a good balance between group and individual interaction.

Benefits of using the icebreaker games for introverts

You will not always have an audience or team super excited about team meetings or workshops. Many facilitators use icebreakers to get people engaged without forcing them to do anything; that’s why the Icebreaker for Introverts Template is perfect for mixed crowds and audiences, especially the ones that are more shy or less acquainted with interacting online.

Here are some benefits of using the Icebreaker for Introverts Template:

  • Run inclusive meetings. Some icebreaker activities for introverts, such as the one Barbara Sedlack created, don’t demand interaction with other participants, and it’s easy for everyone to follow on their own. Because this exercise is designed for people to connect through fun facts about themselves, it’s not invasive and the topics are designed for people to feel comfortable discussing in a group setting.

  • Engage everyone. This template's design is straightforward, making it easy for people to navigate through the board. The colors and elements on the board also help people place their comments and add their answers in a very intuitive, fun way.

  • Connect people. This exercise is designed for people to connect with each other, not necessarily through interactions but via shared interests and fun facts about themselves. That’s why it caters to all audiences, where everyone feels comfortable sharing a bit about who they are.

How to use the Icebreaker for Introverts Template

To get everyone hands-on on your board, select our ready-made Icebreaker for Introverts Template and follow the instructions:

Before facilitation:

  1. Customize the questions. Tailor the questions according to your audience.

  2. Choose frames that will help you navigate them throughout your workshop or meeting.

  3. Lock down elements that should be fixed on your board.

  4. Create a frame for each attendee. If needed, label them with attendees’ names.

Facilitating:

  1. Invite everyone to work on their frames.

  2. Instruct them how to copy and paste images, add stickies and write on the board.

  3. Once everyone is ready, do a quick walk-through, and if you think there is openness, choose participants to elaborate on their frames.

Icebreaker for Introverts Template FAQs

Do introverts like icebreakers?

People who are considered introverts often have difficulties dealing with social interactions. Most icebreakers demand some interaction from participants, so many introverts might not want to participate. If you're going to cater to an introverted audience, choose an icebreaker tailored for them, with exercises that will not demand too much interaction between participants but rather have individual work.

How can I make introverts feel comfortable in meetings?

There are ways to make meetings more inclusive and create a safe space where everyone feels seen and heard. One strategy to make introverts comfortable at meetings is to share the schedule in advance so they know what to expect. If you need active participation, be explicit about your expectations and what they should bring to the table. Giving time to people to think and work on their answer or participation often reduces anxiety levels and lead to a more engaging and efficient meeting.
