Sustainability Cycle Concept Map
The Sustainability Cycle Concept Map is a systems thinking tool designed to help you map and understand the full lifecycle of a product, service, or organisation—from resource input to regeneration.
It visualises how materials, value, and impacts flow through a system, making complex sustainability challenges easier to understand, discuss, and improve. By combining lifecycle thinking with a structured reflection layer, it helps you move beyond linear thinking and uncover circular opportunities.
How to use it
Start in the centre by defining your Core Idea—the product, service, organisation, or value chain you want to explore.
Then work your way through the cycle:
Map each stage: Resource Input → Design & Production → Distribution & Access → Use & Behaviour → Recovery & Value Retention → Regeneration
Describe what is currently happening in each phase (materials, processes, behaviours, flows)
Identify key impacts, inefficiencies, and risks
Add relevant stakeholders across the system
Use the Reflection Layer to deepen your insights:
Highlight challenges and pain points
Capture opportunities for circularity and improvement
Assess environmental, social, and economic impacts
You can use it individually for analysis or collaboratively in workshops to build a shared understanding of a system.
This template is ideal for:
Sustainability consultants and advisors
SMEs and corporates exploring circular economy strategies
Start-ups designing sustainable products or services
Innovation, strategy, and ESG teams
Facilitators running co-creation or systems mapping workshops
Educators and students working with sustainability and systems thinking
Use this template to:
Understand systems holistically rather than in silos
Identify hotspots for intervention and innovation
Spot opportunities for circular economy strategies
Align teams around a shared view of impact and value flows
Turn complexity into clear, actionable insights
