What it is for:A KPI tree, or driver tree, is a diagram that breaks one outcome into the drivers that plausibly influence it, then into measurable indicators. You leave with a one-page tree that links one outcome to its main drivers, each with a measure, a baseline and an owning role, and with the uncertain links clearly marked.
Who it helps:Leaders and teams who track a headline result but are unsure what actually moves it, or who share one outcome across several teams.
When to use it
You have a clear outcome but the team is unsure what actually moves it.
Several teams contribute to one result and each needs a measure it can influence.
Leaders track one headline figure and want to understand why it changes.
How to use it
Write one measurable outcome at the top.
Branch into three to five first-level drivers.
Break drivers down until a single team can act on each.
Give each driver a measure and a current baseline.
Draw proven links solid and uncertain ones dashed, then name an owning role per driver.
Tip:Keep the top outcome about the people served, not about internal activity.
