Critical Thinking & Questioning Framework

This Critical Thinking and Question Framework allows teams to analyze the dimensions of a problem by guiding them into asking different types of questions.

Using a framework from the article Relearning the Art of Asking Questions by Tom Pohlmann and Neethi Mary Thomas, teams are encouraged to think of different types of questions:

• Clarifying: helps understand what was said to clarify intent and understand and avoid own assumptions

• Adjoining: explores related aspects of the problem that are not discussed or talked about as much

• Funnelling: dives deeper into a problem to understand basis of a decision or answer, challenge assumptions, or understand root cause

• Elevating: zooms out to raise broader issues and look at the bigger picture to understand the overall context behind the problem
