The Self-Reflective Retrospective

Report

The Self-Reflective Retrospective template helps you guide your team to a mindset change by promoting positive future behaviours. Especially when a team faces tension, adopting a more self-reflective approach could change the focus on the aspects they could improve themselves. Use this template to reflect and get insights on events, actions, and behaviours.

This activity requires you to think over several situations during a period (ex. previous Sprint) and identify how you reacted. Now think how you could have handled it differently.

Example

“During the Planning meeting, I lost my temper several times. Οn the contrary, my better self would have been more patient and gentle. After all, these guys are my teammates!"

Generate Insights

The key here is for everyone to identify how they could influence and even shape their environment. During this part, a strongly bonded team could suggest ways to support each individual in pursuing their best behaviours. The most important thing is to focus on good behaviours.

The gain for the team is not as trivial and specific as usual. It is an opportunity for coaching towards a sense of accountability and ownership rather than using impediments as an excuse for not learning and improving.

How

  1. Ask the participants to reflect on recent events or situations they faced (min 3).

  2. The participants write down the way they contributed to that situation. Ex. the way they responded, acted, what triggered them, etc.

  3. The participants reflect on their reactions and write what they could have done differently. What would you like to do instead?

Celebrate

Congratulations, the team just made a significant step to self-knowledge and empowerment!
