Supply Chain Diagram: Construction Materials

Trace construction materials from extraction to building use, deconstruction, reuse, and recovery—and find practical ways to reduce carbon, waste, and reliance on virgin materials.

Purpose of the template

Buildings and infrastructure use large volumes of materials and can create major environmental, social, carbon, and waste impacts. This template helps teams map one project, building, infrastructure asset, or material category across its full life cycle.

It supports more circular decisions on reused, recycled, reclaimed, renewable, and urban-mined materials; low-carbon production; adaptable design; material passports; deconstruction; and closed-loop recovery.

What is included

The template follows six connected stages:

  5. Deconstruction, salvage & reuse

  6. Recycling, urban mining & closed-loop recovery

Each stage includes guiding questions and prefilled examples of key risks and opportunities, including virgin-material dependency, quarrying and biodiversity impacts, carbon hotspots, environmental product declarations, design for disassembly, adaptable use, material banks, reuse certification, urban mining, and circular-construction regulation.

The final stage feeds back into the first: recovered materials from buildings and infrastructure can become circular inputs for future projects.

How to use it

Start by completing the Business profile and Construction materials profile. Choose one project, building, infrastructure asset, or material category—such as concrete, steel, glass, insulation, timber, or aggregates—before mapping another.

Work from Stage 1 to Stage 6. Add sticky notes with findings, evidence, suppliers, material volumes, unanswered questions, assumptions, risks, and opportunities. Use green markers for opportunities or actions to explore, and orange markers for risks, gaps, dependencies, or requirements.

Finish by reviewing the full chain together. Prioritise the most important environmental, social, carbon, supply, and regulatory risks. Agree the strongest opportunities to reduce virgin-material use, construction waste, unsafe disposal, and whole-life emissions.

Suggested workshop

Run this as a 90–120 minute cross-functional workshop.

Before the session, select one project, building, infrastructure asset, or material category. Gather available drawings, bills of quantities, specifications, supplier information, environmental product declarations, carbon data, material passports, certification information, and end-of-life plans.

Begin by agreeing the scope and completing the two profiles. Then spend around 10–15 minutes on each supply-chain stage, using the prompts to capture evidence, uncertainties, risks, and circularity opportunities. Mark the most important notes as green or orange as you go.

Use the final 15–20 minutes to agree priorities: the most significant environmental, carbon, social, supply, and regulatory risks; the most promising interventions; and the actions the business will take, support, lead, or advocate for.

Use this template with architects, engineers, developers, contractors, construction managers, procurement teams, sustainability teams, asset managers, facilities teams, material suppliers, waste and recycling partners, legal and compliance teams, and leadership.

It is useful for early-stage design, material strategy, circular procurement, construction planning, renovation, demolition, infrastructure projects, and built-environment innovation workshops.

A starting point, not a complete list

The template is deliberately prefilled with suggestions, example risks, and possible opportunities to make it easier to begin. These are prompts—not fixed answers or a complete checklist. Change, remove, add to, or adapt every element to reflect your project, location, materials, regulations, suppliers, and business priorities.

A shared map of the construction-material life cycle, its highest-priority environmental and social risks, opportunities for circularity and carbon reduction, key regulations and standards, evidence gaps, and a practical set of actions to build a more resilient, low-carbon, circular built environment.
