Report

What it is for:A stakeholder expectations map is a table of the groups with a stake in your work, what each group expects, and the evidence behind that belief. You leave with a short table of what each group expects, how strongly you know it, and two or three research questions with owners.

Who it helps:Project teams at the start of work who keep saying a group will never accept something without knowing who said so.

When to use it

  • At the start of a project, right after you have listed who is involved.

  • When the team keeps saying they will never accept that without being able to say who told them.

  • Before planning interviews, to decide whom to talk to first.

How to use it

  1. List the groups, not named individuals, one per row.

  2. Write each group's expectation as a claim that could be wrong.

  3. Add how you know each claim, and mark those that rest only on assumption.

  4. Write the question that would close each knowledge gap.

  5. Choose two or three groups to research first, each with an owner.

Tip:Invite someone who disagrees with the official view. The most useful rows are the ones where the room splits.
