Report

The Design with Human Data Kit helps product teams design data products people trust. It brings design and data to the same table: What data do we actually need, what value do people get in return, and how do we build trust before writing code?

Run it as a 4–5 hour kick-off for a new product or feature, or use single exercises to clarify a question in your team. Updated in 2026 with questions for products that use AI.

How to use the Design with Human Data Kit

  1. Prepare. Understand the business context and the power dynamics in your company. Invite a core team from design, business and tech, plus experts on call for data, privacy and legal. Block four to five hours.

  2. Frame. Define scope and agreed guidelines. Align on the goals of your project and set rules for how you treat people’s data. (About 80 minutes)

  3. Create. Map data requirements and identify sources. Generate ideas that help people and the business, then check which data each idea needs and how you can access and protect it. (About 80 minutes)

  4. Reflect. Evaluate data value and business impact. Weigh what the data is really worth to people and map intended and unintended effects, including what happens when automated decisions go wrong. (About 60 minutes)

  5. After the workshop: Prototype. Document the concept for technical hand-off, build a prototype with the tools you know, test it with people and refine.
