Task analysis is a systematic method of studying the steps a user has to take to complete a task.

What do I need?

• User details

  • Persona, job title

• Key assumptions

  • Before the task can begin

• Task flow elements

  • action, decision-making, flow, additional comments, waiting state, pages

• Business objective

  • business objective for each page in the flow

How do I prepare?

Learn about the user goals and tasks through research like:

• Contextual inquiries

• Interviews

• Usability studies

What are the key questions answered through this template?

• How is the overall flow? Is there anything missing?

• Are there any dependencies?

• Can we improve sequencing or remove redundancy (if any)?

• What key information and other details are required at each step?

What else should I know?

Focus on creating a user's task flow and NOT a:

• System's flow

• Workflow analysis (focuses on how work gets done across multiple people whereas task flow focuses on a workflow for one user)
