Multidisciplinary Team Building Game

Report

About

Agile (and other) teams are made up of people with different capabilities together into one multidisciplinary team, collaborating daily towards a common goal.

Those teams should also be small enough to effectively communicate with each other and committed to the team full time, which means that people may play more than one role on the team. The great thing is that people have different capabilities that don't always fit within their given job title.

This workshop helps people think about how to create multidisciplinary teams that focus on bringing the right knowledge, skills, and experience together rather than building teams based on job titles.

Learning outcomes

The goal of this workshop is to experience building multidisciplinary teams.

  • Understand that people's capabilities go further than their job title

  • Learn how to think about capabilities needed and match people to those

  • How to get the most out of the capabilities you have available.

  • Find learning opportunities to grow capabilities.

How to use this board

  1. Get your group together

  2. Explain the rules of the game

  3. Introduce scenario 1 (keep scenario 2 hidden for now)

  4. Ask the group to move the people around to build the teams, discussing as they go, make note of decisions made and compromises needed

  5. Repeat for scenario 2 (they will probably need to review the team from scenario 1 to make it work)

  6. Discuss
