Wedding planning FAQs

Here are a few commonly-asked wedding planning questions to help guide your planning process:

How do I make a wedding planning checklist?

To make a wedding planning checklist, start with the main categories of tasks that need to be completed ahead of a wedding, including the following:

  • Wedding date and location

  • Venue

  • Guest list

  • Ceremony

  • Photography

  • Decor and flowers

  • Reception

  • Apparel

  • Gifts and favors

  • Rings

  • Honeymoon

  • Rehearsal dinner

  • Transportation

Then, consider any items you want to add or remove from the checklist to make the event your own. It’s best to create an estimated timeline for each of your checklist items so you can work backward, starting with the tasks that will take the longest or require the longest lead time. For example, many people first decide on their attire to ensure ample time for it to be designed, sewn, and tailored.

How do you make a simple wedding plan?

  1. Be clear about your goals. For a simple wedding plan, it’s important that you begin the wedding planning process with very clear goals including the wedding size and budget. The more clear you are about why you’re having the wedding in the first place, and whom the wedding is for (ex. you and your fiance, your family, your friends), the easier it will be to make decisions quickly to achieve your desired outcome.

  2. Keep it small. A simple wedding plan is typically more achievable by keeping your budget and wedding size small to moderate (fewer than 100 guests).

  3. Work with professionals. There are several additional ways to keep your wedding plan simple by working with experts who can do the heavy lifting for you:

    1. Hire a wedding planner, if you have the budget

    2. Choose an “all-inclusive” venue that provides and plans for every detail of your wedding day including food, music, decor, seating, tables, DJ, and more

    3. Take advantage of free online planning tools, such as this template, to keep your wedding plans simple, organized, and in tune with your original vision.

What percentage of your budget is a wedding planner?

A good rule of thumb is to allocate five to 15% of your budget to your wedding planner, depending on their involvement. For example, a day-of coordinator might cost closer to 5% of your budget, while a complete wedding planner who coordinates every detail of your wedding will likely run closer to 15%.

Can you plan a wedding in six months?

Yes! You can certainly plan a wedding in six months. Doing so will likely require you to be very decisive, flexible, and compromise on some of your plans.
