How to use this icebreaker template

To use this template, simply fill in the [THIS] and [THAT] space with options your group will choose either digitally (if you’re playing online), or by physically moving to the side of the room that indicates your preferred option.

To personalize the game and ensure the group you’re playing with is engaged, choose options that are relevant to those people. You can also choose a different theme each time you play to reuse the icebreaker. For example, you can play “This or That: Movies.”

If you have time, you can select one or two people after unveiling each option to share why they picked it.

Pro-tip: To make your game more visually appealing, you can add emojis, photos from the Unsplash app, or icons found in your Miro toolbar on the left hand side of the screen.

How to facilitate “This or That?”

To facilitate, you can scroll through each option on your Miro board, or click on “Present” to unveil each option one by one. This may be a more exciting and engaging way to play.

Instructions to play “This or That”

On each slide, you'll see two options (for example, cats or dogs). Quickly, refer to the arrows to move to the side of the room that indicates the option you prefer.

Continue moving sides as each new option appears. If you don't prefer one or the other, you can stand in the middle!

This way, you can learn about others in the room and help others learn more about you! This is a great way to build relationships and find ways to connect with one another.

Playing “This or That” digitally or in the workplace

If you are using this icebreaker for an online class or meeting, add headshots of each of the attendees on or around each of the option cards.

Ask them to move their avatar to one side of the arrow or the other to indicate their choice. If you have time, you can select one or two people from each option to share why they picked it.

Use Facilitation mode (under the "Present" dropdown) to allow attendees to use reaction emojis, ask questions, leave comments, etc.
