1. Set the agenda

Before starting your online PI planning, have clear objectives, goals, and timelines for the event.

2. Define the program backlog

It should be defined and prioritized based on the product roadmap, business goals, and user needs.

3. Break down tasks

Once you define the program backlog, teams should break it down into smaller increments, typically two to four weeks.

4. Draft a plan

Review your team’s capacity, and align on plans and commitments.

PI Planning FAQs

Why do PI Planning?

Product teams run a PI Planning session to set goals, identify tasks and dependencies, track progress, and determine the product and business view and direction. Miro’s visual workspace helps product managers run their PI Planning sessions more efficiently, building on the PI Planning board with everything the team needs: agenda, program, ROAM board, and a team board. That way, Agile teams are able by the end of the PI Planning event to draft a plan and move into execution seamlessly.

When is a PI planning held?

PI planning, or Program Increment planning, is typically held at the beginning of each Program Increment (PI) in the SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) methodology. The frequency of PI planning sessions varies depending on the organization, but they usually take place every 8-12 weeks. During the PI planning session, the Agile teams come together to align their goals, review and prioritize the features and user stories for the upcoming PI, and establish a shared plan for the next increment.

What happens in a PI planning session?

A PI planning session is a meeting that teams use to plan out their work for the upcoming Program Increment (PI). During the session, teams will discuss their goals, objectives, and tasks for the PI, and create a plan to help them achieve their goals.
