The team skill matrix helps a (new) team gain an overview of the skills available and the motivation attached to applying these skills.

Possible goals:

  • get an overview of the skills (and gaps) in a team

  • show skills gaps, e.g., to management

  • co-create a plan for skill- and knowledge sharing on a team

Who benefits the most?

  • self-organised product or service development teams

  • teams that have more work to do than time

  • teams with a very wide tech portfolio

How to use it?

Here's my 1h moderation agenda:

  • 5' Intro

  • 10' Collect skills (or tools) on the yellow sticky notes

  • 5' Agree on which yellow sticky notes to keep & which to group

  • 15' one-all: write down your skill/knowledge levels and your motivation/joy levels (first privately on paper, then put it on the board together)

  • 15' learn from it together and agree on the next steps (e.g., learning tandems, communicating gaps to hire new people, etc.)
