Take a different perspective on leadership by flipping the traditional organisational structure chart

How to Use

1. Flip your team structure chart with the team at the top and the leader at the back of the pack.

2. Shake out the issues with open, honest and transparent discussion, place them where the leader can see and start helping to resolve.

3. Call out the decisions and the opportunities that the team can clearly see and take action - empower the team to resolve, support them by coaching, removing impediments, championing the team.

Why we did it

  • For improved visibility of challenges (and opportunities)

  • To foster a culture of psychological safety where issues are openly shared

  • To enhance team autonomy and engagement – put decision making with the expertise

  • To mix things up!

When to use it

  • When the team feels stale, tired and disengaged – time for something completely different

  • Leadership feels disconnected from the team, the team feels disconnected from leadership

  • When things keep going wrong and you don’t know why (Surprise!)

Visual Agile Coaching Tips

  • Talk as a team about psychological safety and progressive leadership approaches: coaching, self-organisation, transparency.

  • Talk about the flip with the team, ask how they feel about it? How does it change their perspective?
