Marketplace of (role) Expectations

Report

Why

This Mirotemplate helps to identify and clarify different mutual expectations that people have of each other's roles.

  • often conflicts inside/outside of teams have their roots in intransparent role expectations

  • so: talking about mutual expectations in a constructive manner is the goal of this board

  • often the moderated conversation about mutual expectations is already clarifying a lot and there is no need for sophisticated written statements

This format has the following advantages:

  • it gives time for everyone to reflect on their expectations and firstly to write things down and also to react non-verbally before going into a discussion

  • usually only a few aspects remain where there is disagreement --> so the format helps to finally focus on the few remaining points that need discussion

  • often the effect is that there is more agreement and appreciation than disagreement

Target Audience

Every team situation where conflicts / frictions occur - within or outside of team - that might have to do with different understandings / expectations of each others roles/responsibilities.

How

This format is a little bit complicated both preparation-wise and facilitating-wise, because participants need to understand when they are in which steps and in which frame, but usually with a little bit of guidance they quickly get the hang of it.

The basis idea is:

  • for each role there is a section with two frames: one for the expectations of others and on for the role owners response

  • each participating role gets some time to formulate their expectations and after x minutes they move on to the next section (clockwise)

  • More details can be found on the board directly
