If the point is to build understanding, then wasting the entire session on an awkward back-and-forth isn’t going to cut it. Too many 1:1’s between a Manager and their line report go like this - you’ve likely had one.

I’ve created and been using this template. It gives an opportunity to empathize, understand, guide, and measure. We’ve also been connecting it to career roadmaps so we can collect evidence and track progress towards defined goals.
