Data Storytelling Canvas

Report

This is a canvas for creating good data stories.

Start by keeping track of your checklist. Stick to the order as much as possible.

Find the "what" (not the "why") of your data-related project. What actually happened? What did you achieve?

Create a database for Characters, Insights and Obstacles. You can generate a lot of them, and select later which ones you will use.

Move on to the storyline frame. First, outline the major events in order. Think of them as "titles of your chapters". It's a line, so it has a direction.

Think how you are going to tell the story and reorganise the order of the events accordingly. Maybe it's in chronological order, so it's the same as the outline, but maybe want to tell the results (climax) in the very beginning.

Perhaps your story might fit the 3-Act Structure in telling or outline. Use it to recognise the levels of intensity and challenges in the story.

Map out the technical blockers (things that are hard to explain) and use analogies as a way to overcome them.

Based on the format chosen (live presentation, written report, etc.), write then rewrite your story. Get some feedback, rehearse a lot and you'll do great.
