Our Journey: From Whiteboard to Innovation Workspace
Today we're entering a new chapter, and I couldn't be more excited to be on this journey with all of you. When we started Miro (called RealtimeBoard back then) in 2011, our idea was simple: bring a whiteboard into the browser. A picture paints a thousand words, and whiteboarding is the fastest way to get on the same page.
Within a few years, we realized people were using our tool far beyond whiteboarding, spanning UX Design, Product Management, Agile Development, and more. We rebranded to Miro, inspired by Joan Miró's artworks and the idea of bringing a canvas to every knowledge worker to spark creativity in day to day work.
During the pandemic, we scaled from 5 million to 50 million users, establishing the visual collaboration category as critical to innovation workflows. But we knew we should go beyond visual collaboration to progress on our mission of empowering teams to create the next big thing.
In 2024, we introduced the Innovation Workspace, connecting the messy beginning of projects with structured execution in one place. We added Tables, Timelines, Diagrams, Kanban, Docs, Spaces, and Blueprints to standardize workflows across organizations. Our users have created more than 20 million formats in the last year, and more than 250,000 customers now innovate with Miro every day. Customers like Ubisoft use Miro to accelerate video game production and improve teamwork and Keller Williams runs scaled planning rituals in Miro to cut time-to-market by 50%.
Putting AI Where Teams Work
When we started, our focus was enabling collaboration between people. Over the last couple of years, it became clear that AI could bring major value to creative problem solving and the innovation process. We all started spending more time thinking with AI before, during, or after team sessions. But this approach creates silos: we use AI outside of team and work context, manually retyping prompts and leveraging individual model memory. Chat-based AI is great for individual learning and thinking, but its linear nature doesn't allow for easy comparison of ideas, exploration of solution edges, or harnessing the power of multiple models for problem-solving.
We at Miro believe that AI should work where teams work, powered by an intuitive interface. AI should contribute to teamwork, suggest creative ideas, support the "yes, and-ing" process, and help projects progress quickly from stage to stage.
The canvas is a perfect home for AI because both are non-linear and non-deterministic. On the canvas, you can connect workflows from beginning to end, explore different paths, and manage the big picture of work.
The AI Innovation Workspace
Today, Miro is evolving to the AI Innovation Workspace, a co-pilot for innovation, which includes multiple new products:
AI Capabilities for Team Co-Creation
These capabilities bring AI to where teams work, accelerating individual, team, and cross-team innovation quality and velocity across the whole business. Our ambition is to help you and your team experience the flow of work.
Flows: Build multi-step visual AI workflows that you can interact with at every step of the process. Co-create and think with AI on the canvas to make teamwork flow faster.
Sidekicks: Collaborate with conversational AI right on the canvas. No need for complex prompts as you explore ideas and concepts, because Sidekicks use all multimodal context that’s already on the canvas.
MCP (Model Context Protocol): Connect context from Miro to code generation and AI tools, to improve the quality of agentic coding and keep things in sync. Generate Miro diagrams directly from your IDE through MCP to visualize your architecture, accelerate onboarding, and collaborate on technical evolution.
Your AI and Knowledge: Bring your models of choice into Miro as well as your company knowledge (e.g., Gemini Enteprise, Glean, Amazon Q), control output, and keep it compliant with your internal practices and policies.
Product teams at Ubisoft, Red Hat, Virgin Media O2 and GitHub are just some of those who use Miro with AI to accelerate their workflows and ship faster. For each of them, AI-powered collaboration makes it possible to move seamlessly from early-stage ideation to structured execution.
AI-First Product Development
We've seen firsthand from working with our customers how the product development lifecycle is being transformed in the AI era. And we've built a solution to help product, engineering, design and marketing teams to reimagine how they get to market faster with better quality. It's called Miro for Product Acceleration, and it's a deeply connected collection of AI-first products that help teams build the right thing, maximize their investments in AI code gen, and connect strategy and goals to day to day execution.
1. Discovering and building the right thing
AI lets us build faster than ever, but that speed becomes a liability when you're racing in the wrong direction. Product teams are drowning in scattered customer feedback while their AI-powered engineering teams ship in days what used to take months. The result? Teams efficiently build products which don't move the needle, just faster. When teams don’t explore multiple solutions at the same pace that developers code, they risk investing in the wrong products or features, wasting development time and falling behind competitors. That's why we built Miro Insights to synthesize fragmented customer data in real-time. Miro Prototypes validates ideas visually in minutes. Miro Journeys transforms static customer maps into living knowledge. And Miro Design Workshops aligns everyone before AI sends you sprinting. It's about building the right thing before you build it fast.
“When we adopt Miro Insights, our customers feel heard… That makes them happy, that makes us happy.” - Guy Gertner, VP of Product at Cyera
2. Getting more value from AI code generation tools
Context is everything for codegen tools. The richer and more specific context, the better agentic code is. Miro Technical Design creates one collaborative space where architecture decisions and documentation live alongside your actual work. Miro Specs transforms that context into structured specifications that plug directly into AI coding tools through Model Context Protocol. Now your AI understands what you're building and why.
3. Connecting strategy to day-to-day execution
Every leader knows this pain: you set OKRs, but somewhere between boardroom and standup, they get lost. Everyone's moving fast, but in different directions. Miro Goals makes them visible where teams actually work. Miro Roadmaps creates living plans connected to what matters. Miro Portfolios gives real-time visibility with AI spotting misalignment early. And Planning & Delivery streamlines everything from big room planning to daily execution. It's an unbroken chain from strategy to shipped code, where everyone sees how their work drives the company forward.
All of these new products are built on a single platform with a shared data model, advanced security and compliance controls, and responsible AI certification. This foundation serves organizations of all sizes, from small businesses and non-profits to fast-scaling startups and highly regulated enterprises.
Getting Started
With all these new AI capabilities available, the number one question we hear is: Where to start and how to go on the transformation journey most effectively? One of our main principles is to keep our product as intuitive and self-service oriented as possible. So we built ready-made Blueprints and made them available for everyone. To help bigger organizations on the transformation journey, we've built our internal professional services team, including AI transformation practitioners, as well as an ecosystem of strategic partners who engage deeply with our customers.
I can't wait to see what amazing things you'll do with Miro's latest products, and I couldn't be more excited to continue on this journey together.
Gratefully yours,
