Miro’s journey to becoming an AI-first company

Hi, I’m Tomas. I’ve been leading AI transformation here at Miro, and I’m excited to share how we’re using AI to improve our employees’ and users’ experiences. My team reports to the Chief Transformation Officer, driving changes and propelling Miro to new heights.

No longer just clickbait – AI is  a game-changer. Soon, companies will be divided into those that use AI and those that don’t. At Miro, we’re positioning ourselves at the forefront of this shift.

So what exactly is Internal AI

We developed our vision for Internal AI so our employees could flourish. We help Mironeers integrate AI into their daily activities, providing added benefits to our users. Vital to our workflow, AI improves our abilities without replacing us. 

Alongside embedding AI within the Miro product (like our Intelligent Canvas), we’re building high-performing teams that embrace an “AI-first” mindset. This shift goes beyond streamlining tasks; it’s about reimagining how we can delight our users and push transformation.

By using AI internally, we elevate both the employee and customer experience in several ways:

  1. Accelerating product improvement: AI helps us quickly analyze data and user feedback.
  2. Optimizing customer experience: AI revolutionizes how we serve our users by zooming in on the customer experience from multiple angles. From enhancing customer support to generating deeper insights, AI is revolutionizing how we serve our customers.
  3. Enhancing collaboration and empowerment: AI tools reduce small tasks so our teams can focus on game-changing ideas. And with AI training, our Mironeers have all the tools they need to become AI superheroes.

Our AI journey, onwards and upwards

AI is transforming how we work, and it’s just the beginning. AI might reduce parts of workflow, but it’s the people who form our DNA. Their creativity drives us forward, something automation will never replace. Our AI journey is naturally aligned with Miro’s core values. This journey can be broken down into three major stages, each represented by some of my favorite Miro Behaviors:

  • Listen first, talk second: We partnered with an AI research company and discussed AI with over 300 employees. Three insights we gained from listening:
    • The biggest opportunities to leverage AI internally: We explored how AI can streamline our internal processes, enhance productivity, and foster innovation. Employees provided input on various departments and functions where AI could make a significant impact, such as customer support, product development, and data analysis.
    • Challenges and concerns about AI: Employees had questions about AI’s ethical implications in the workplace. Addressing these concerns is essential for building trust and ensuring a smooth transition.
    • Ideas on how to drive this transformation: The session also sparked a wealth of creative ideas on integrating AI effectively into our daily operations. With a range of suggestions, these ideas will help shape our roadmap for becoming an AI-first company.
  • Launch fast and iterate: Based on the insights gathered, we built a roadmap to address the identified points. Embracing our spirit of agility, we set up a tiger team to work on quick wins, such as providing company-wide access to GPT solutions and launching AI enablement initiatives, while simultaneously defining our long-term strategy.
  • Build and grow together: This is where we currently stand. We are collaborating across different areas of the company, identifying champions, and partnering with our Leadership and Extended Leadership teams to drive real transformation in how we work using AI. This includes workshops, embedding AI thinking in team rituals, and much more.

Adopting the right mindset

As we continue this exciting journey, we realize that adopting the right mindset is essential. This shift is more than just a tech implementation — it’s a fundamental change in how we approach our work and problem-solving.
